This dumb question asks about your memory, and what you think of your news coverage.
France and the USA enforced no-fly zones over part of Iraq between the gulf wars.
The UK and the USA enforced no-fly zones over another part of Iraq during the same period.
Then the French lost stomach for flying over a sovereign country and bombing the occasional radar which “locked on” to the Coalition aircraft.
Somewhere in all this non-contribution of France, W decided to stop calling them French Fries and call them Freedom Fries.
There is a statue dedicated to Freedom in the United States. As Noam Chomsky once observed, they should have on the West Coast another statue, a Statue of Responsibility. More on that in another post, perhaps.
The statue of Freedom is actually called the Statue of Liberty. It was a gift from France to the USA. I guess W wanted flies with that.
Interesting that no news item I ever saw had any criticism of W renaming the fries, nor of any connection to the French gift.
How do you remember these events?
